Pernille has a new dog toy to play with but isn’t sure it can see. It has no eyes. “What a strange dog it is” she thought. “I must get Mama to sew on some buttons or something to let it see. Otherwise, how will it know I am here?”
I had been considering options to improve Pernille’s legs. Zwergnase made her as a sitting doll. This gave her a large rump and small curved legs, with gathering in the inside seam to make the legs curl. I was able to use heavy gauge aluminum wire to make braces to sort of straighten her legs to make her stand, but it had to be strapped to her body and was visible of course. Her feet were curved too and made to turn inward, so she had to have her large Zwergnase boots on to stand with the brace.
I had thought of remaking her body from scratch, allowing for some sort of sitting and standing ability. I studied some internet directions for cloth body jointing and suede skin fabric and so on. I set the idea aside until I could find the right stuff for doing it. Then last night I was looking in my closet and saw that Paradise Doll that I had tried to sell on eBay and looked at her legs. They were ball jointed at the hip, the leg swirled inside a cup that has the body fabric clipped inside another cup. I cut around the fabric and removed each whole leg unit from the Paradise Doll. Then came the agonizing decision whether or not to cut off Lilly’s legs as they were. Ack, I thinkI had twelve mini heart attacks, but I calmed myself down. For heavens sake I can always recreate a new body or sew the old legs back on. I have made doll bodies before.
It was still a bit nerve wracking to sew the fabric from the legs to Pernille’s legs, and I had to be careful, I saw the sand was loose inside her torso, so I had to keep a plug of stuffing in the leg hole, making another hole in the middle of the plug as there is a knob at the center of the ball joint that helps keep the socket stable inside the body. I wished I had taken a photo of it, but I was doing late night surgery in my room and the camera was downstairs.
Well I have to say that I was extremely pleased with the results! Pernille can stand, sit and has larger feet that help fit the AG shoes better. The legs are too thin for her body shape and wide apart because of her torso shape, but her original legs were just as thin and her feet were smaller. It does take some manuevering to help her stand, and because her torso is very heavy with sand and her leg placement by Zwergnase is completely forward, Pernille must lean forward to stand. I may be able to correct this by placing the legs further back, but I want to think on it.
I am not going to show the seams just yet, as they are only basted on and I will resew them with stronger thread later. Right now, I want to get a feel for the placement and how I feel about the legs altogether. Here you can see that she does end up with “wide hips”. I would love to find thicker more shapely legs, but I doubt they would have this wonderful ball joint feature. Her height is slightly increased, she is exactly 20 inches tall.
Here her rump is quite pronounced. But compared to her original Legs:
The straight legs give her an older look, less babyish.
The ball joint allows for more movement. Her legs can cross, she can point her toes inward or outward. However, no bending at the knee of course and yet, I am finding a new thrill with her more grown up height and proportions.
Another project I have been working on this week was to remove the deep wine colour paint on her lips and soften it with light pink. As you can see in the photo’s above the difference in lips. I just never cared for “lipstick” lips on young girl companions.
Not the best outfit to show her new legs off with, but I am really pleased and I do believe Pernille (once she gets use to the new sensation) will love being able to walk and stand and get about.
Original sitting legs. This shows how the hip area was set forward.
Now from behind, this is her butt, not tummy:
I have not had much presence of mind to post lately, but I wanted to cheer myself up a bit. Lilly has been a wonderful companion, her solid presence gives me such comfort. Until our personal situation finds it’s new path, I cannot spend a single penny on anything. Nada, not so much as piece of penny candy.
How does that feel? Very strange. I am not lacking for anything, it’s not a dire situation at this point, but knowing that I cannot spend any money makes me want to spend it. lol. I had once again packed up Frankie and all the 1/12th stuff and was ready to send it back to the mainland, but now this would be too frivilous of an expense. So I took him out of the box, and set up the sofa and bar for him. It cheered me up to see his wide grin like there wasn’t a care in the world. He had a bottle of booze in his hand and oh, how I wished I could join him for a drink and a song. Please, Frankie, sing a lovely song to me, let the cares wash away. Wow, how weird that Frank’s smile was just what I needed. I have always seen him as a prop, but here he was, giving me a bit of companionship.
I am so thankful that I do have plenty of fabric, yarns to knit or crochet, patterns to play with and Lilly and Frank really do have enough stuff. I am glad I invested in shoes for her. Glad Frank has a well stocked bar. lol. I am glad I did not buy a new laptop, which I was just about to do. Glad my computer is in working order again and the small investment of an external cd/dvd rom drive before the sh*t hit the fan. So as long as I ease into this new crisis with a deep breath and a feeling that for now, it will be ok, I can hold Lilly and wink at Frank and be glad they are both with me.
Last weekend (my last spending spree, *sob*) I found a doll for Lilly. She thought it looked like she wil look when she grows up with red hair and blue eyes. There is no tag to be found, but I think she may be Russian. The outfit Lilly is wearing is human new born clothing, fitting like a dream.
I love her little red heeled boots. I also bought a can of spray paint for her big wardrobe in periwinkle. I may go ahead and spray the table and chair set too. Oh, and some playdough, which I want to make some food pieces. All fun projects ahead. I am still working on the crochet underdress, which of course will be a stand alone dress too. I have the front and back done and one sleeve is halfway done. I hope I won’t have forgotten the pattern by the time I pick it up to finish. That’s all for now.
Here is the pinafore I have been working on. It is not finished, buttons need to be added, threads woven in and som sort of finishing trim added. I decided to make a long sleeved underdress for it, which would have long sleeves and be longer in length than the pinafore. I started it last night, the collar shows above.
I am making it light and lacey so that there isn’t too much bulk under the pinafore, which is heavier. I am thinking at this time, the underdress will most likely be a simple A line. It’ll take a long time to get it finished, but thought I would at least show the progression. When my daughter was very young, I made a lot of crochet pinafores to put over her clothes that helped keep her warm in our cold apartment. This reminds me of those long ago days.
I haven’t decided on the final look of all this. It will come as I finish the underdress.
Lilly ended up getting freckles from being in the sun that day we went to the park!
They are faint, but seem to be just right for her complexion. I am still working on the croceht pinafore, sheesh, it is taking a long time with such thin yarn. It’s not even a fancy stitch, but I wanted to crochet flowers on it as the design, so I kept it single and double crochet stitches throughout.
I have lost my wonderful blogging editor, Live Writer. I was so upset (I actually lost all of the Live essentials and a couple of other programs) that for the life of me, I could not get back no matter what I did. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, going back in time, I did virus scans and used all of my computer maintenance fixes. Nothing. At best, it had something to do with the latest microsoft update, but even going back to a date previous to that download, I could not salavage anything, nor reinstall my beloved programs.
Fortunately, after a great deal of searching, I found acceptable replacement programs, but it will all take getting use to it. Right now, I am experimenting with Zoundry Raven as my blogging editor (I would rather blog from my computer than directly on the website) and we’ll see how this goes. So far I like it!
On Thursday, we needed to walk over to my youngest grandson’s school to turn in some paperwork. Lilly wanted to go with us, and I realized that this was her very first outing!
We really had a nice walk, and after going to his school, we found a park across the street that we went to enjoy.
I let my grandson play in the water section (there is a huge playground to the right. Lilly and I stayed with the baby and enjoyed the cool island breezes.
I was so happy that Lilly could share a moment like this with me. She just brings me such a smile and calm feeling. I have a lot more I want to write about her and my growing attachment to her, but I wanted to also get a photo of her sitting at her table and her new puppy dog slippers:
I am so happy to have found this table for her. It is perfect in height and scale. The bird cage, radio and tea set (all bought before I knew about her) all work so perfectly too. I have so many other things at home that will work for her too, so I have this peaceful feeling that this was all meant to be and that I can finally relax into one scale and one direction.
I want to post this as a test and see how it works and if there is anything I need to set up.
Yesterday as we were coming home, this table and chair set were sitting on the curb with a doll stroller. We stopped and asked them if the were tossing the set and they said yes….so Lilly got a fabulous table and chair set, which she promptly begged to have her tea set brought out.
